Harmful Effects of PRP, Stem Cell, or Steroids to Tissues/Ligaments
Many times sprain/strain injuries will cause tearing of ligaments like a spinal disc tear where the spinal disc is herniated because it was torn on impact from a car wreck for instance. In these cases, without proper rehabilitative treatment, many patient's will be recommended by their rehab doctor to seek steroid injection treatment, especially if their pain and functional symptoms are not improving reasonably with over a month of therapy and medication management. The idea is to be pain free, so naturally many will agree to this recommendation. But had you been informed prior to treatment, you may had decided else wise. Also, many clinics are in the business of providing PRP and/ or Stem cell injections in theory to try and influence ligaments to rejuvenate. Risks include rejection or allergic reaction that can be deadly as there is no way to know before treatment and should be a last resort after more conservative measures have been exhausted.
Below is an illustration of a helical spring shaped collagen ligament (Disc or ligament tissues that can tear, especially if there was a car accident) and when exposed to chemicals can be denatured into losing there spring shape and lead to micro tearing over time, which leads to more ligament tearing which is the initial problem in the first place. So to try to establish some relief, but have more problems develop over time from the denatured effect of steroid treatment to ligaments isn't a wise choice, and should be a last resort as a means of conservative treatment, but in retrospect is a radical treatment.
